Saul Our Maremma Livestock Guardian Dog (LGD) Thanks to his breeder, Breezy Meadow Cashmere Farm for entrusting us with this most wonderful, invalueable dog!
About 10-12 weeks old
Before acquiring a LGD, do LOTS of research. These breeds are NOT for everyone! They are strong willed, independent and do most of the "guarding" by barking. As we both love domestic and wild animals, when we started our farm 15 years ago we wanted to manage our farm in harmony with nature as much as possible. We Really did not want to destroy wildlife and domestic animals in protection of our livestock unless Absolutely necessary. So...a livestock guardian dog has been the perfect answer to our dilemma. We currently free range our herd of angora goats, highland heifer and poultry. With our guardian dog, we have not lost any animals to predators when he has been on duty. We have brown and black bear and wolves going thru our yard (they have killed animals around us) and of course the high prey occasion Alaska Husky dog that gets loose. He even protects our poultry from the ravens, hawks and of course foxes, weasels etc. He is probably the most valuable asset to our farm!
Saul loves his "teddies"
He is most active and on guard in the evenings, becoming almost a different dog. During the day he acts lazy and amiable although always ready. Come evening he is active, alert and patrolling.
Watching over his charges and enjoying some leisure time.
